As one component of our production reforms, Shimadzu has been striving to both increase production efficiency and improve product quality by manufacturing a larger number of analytical instruments in-house. Started in November 2005, construction of the new analytical and measuring instruments plant within our corporate headquarters is now complete and operational.
The new plant is a 21,700 square meter, four-story steel structure, that cost a total of approximately 3.5 billion yen. Designed to be energy efficient and environmental-friendly, this building uses metal-faced insulated sandwich-type wall panels, photovoltaic solar panels, and sensors to detect motion and adjust lighting.
This new plant is the result of approximately one year of verification via the operation of a pilot plant. Products produced in this new plant will include approximately 40 models of analytical and measuring instruments. Pull-manufacturing methods will be used to not only improve quality, but also reduce lead times, inventory and costs. Shimadzu’s goal is to ultimately manufacture approximately 50% of the Analytical and Measuring Instruments Division’s products in-house.
