Mass Spectrometry Glossary
Notes
- While hyphens may be used to connect words and create compound nouns with a single meaning, hyphens may also be omitted.
(ex. EI-MS, FAB-MS, fast-atom -> EIMS, FABMS, fast atom)
- Slashes are, in principle, used for so-called hybrid instruments that combine 2 independ-ent instruments. Hyphens may also be use in these cases or no symbol at all may be used.
(ex. LC/MS -> LC-MS, desorption/ionization -> desorption ionization)
- While "I" is often attached at the end of abbreviations for various ionization methods, this may or may not always be the custom.
(ex. 1 FD, PD, FAB)
(ex. 2 TSP, MALD, ES, APS -> TSPI, MALDI, ESI, APSI)
