Mass Spectrometry Glossary

Atomic weight

The mass of any element, expressed in grams, when the number of atoms present (Avagadro's number) is equal to the number of atoms in 12g of 12C carbon (1mol). The atomic weight of an ele-ment is an average value and is determined by measuring the mass and relative proportion of iso-topes of the element using a mass spectrograph.
