Shimadzu Releases Comprehensive 2D Chromatography e-Series, the

Shimadzu has released the e-Series comprehensive 2D gas and liquid chromatographs. The new systems maximize the uppermost features of chromatography, separation performance, and detection, and achieve high-resolution analysis, even for structurally similar compounds. The e-Series consists of the Nexera-e LCxLC system and the Ultra-e GCxGC system. Dedicated ChromSquare software is used for data analysis.

The e-Series are the commercialized products resulting from our collaboration with professor Luigi Mondello at the University of Messina in Italy, who is renowned for his advanced research in the field of comprehensive 2D chromatography. Combining two different separation systems, the e-Series enables the separation of target substances in complex samples containing a large number of components. These systems are ideal for a variety of fields, such as foods, flavors and fragrances, environmental, petroleum, and chemical, where there is an increasing need for expeditious and comprehensive analysis of small differences in complex samples.

Shimadzu is offering the column switching two-dimensional LC system "Co-Sense system", the column switching two-dimensional GC system "MD-GC system" and others. These systems enable the detailed quantitative analysis of target compounds specified with the comprehensive screening with e-Series. With these multidimensional systems, from the exploratory research to the precise analysis, Shimadzu offers highest separation technologies appropriate for the customer's workflow.


1. Excellent Performance for Enhanced Separation and High-Speed Analysis

The e-Series systems offer superior peak capacity far exceeding conventional HPLC and GC systems, making them capable of high-resolution analysis of structural analogs contained in natural extracts and other complex matrices. The LC-30AD solvent delivery unit in the Nexera-e system, which offers world-class usable maximum pressure and solvent delivery stability, allows a wide range of separation parameters to be selected for both 1st and 2nd dimensional separation systems. The Nexera-e can be configured with the SPD-M30A photo-diode array detector, which features high sampling rates up to 200 Hz, or the LCMS-8050 triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS, which features polarity switching of 5 msec and a scan rate of 30,000 u/sec. The Ultra-e incorporates the latest in high-speed data collection, rapid cooling times (cool from 450°C to 50°C in 3.4 minutes), and a scanning rate of 20,000 amu/sec, which lends itself to more complex measurements such as SIM/Scan data collection.

2. Systems Based on Ultra Fast Mass Spectrometry (UFMS) Technology

The e-Series chromatography products are supported by the excellent performance of Shimadzu's mass spectrometers. The Ultra-e takes full advantage of the UFMS technology included in the GCMS-QP2010 Ultra, the first quadrupole GC-MS (Gas Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer) system in the world that can scan fast enough to adequately acquire GCxGC data files. As a result, the Ultra-e can fully characterize many complex mixtures and perform complicated analyses not possible with other GCMS analyzers. The Nexera-e can be combined with Shimadzu's ultra-fast and highly sensitive triple quadrupole LCMS-8050, which incorporates Shimadzu's proprietary ultrafast (UF) technologies and features a new high-efficiency CID cell to maintain signal intensity and suppress crosstalk. The combination of world-leading chromatography and mass spectrometry technology with sophisticated ChromSquare analysis software strongly supports the implementation of advanced, highly complex chemical analyses.

3. Easy Analysis

ChromSquare dedicated analysis software features an interactive user interface, and provides detailed information on each peak at a glance. ChromSquare displays contour plots (general and magnified views), MS/MS spectra, and second dimensional MS chromatograms on the same screen. By switching between the three panels displayed in the same window, users can perform all necessary operations, from qualitative analysis to creation of calibration curves and quantitative analysis. Providing intuitive operation, this software enables users to achieve easy analysis from a wealth of information.
