EMC Testing Laboratory Accreditation Based on the ISO/IEC 17025 International Standard — Promoting the Timely Supply of Products with High Reliability —

Shimadzu Corporation established the Quality Center equipped anechoic chambers to improve product quality, including equipment and functionality for performing various evaluation and data analysis work necessary for product development and analyzing product problems. Recently, this Quality Center received international ISO/IEC 17025 (General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories) accreditation to serve as an EMC testing laboratory.

The modern world is overflowing with a wide variety of devices that emit electromagnetic waves, such as electrical/electronic goods, wireless devices, and communication systems. These items must not emit electromagnetic waves that would affect other devices nearby and they must have a resistance to the electromagnetic waves emitted from other devices, so that they do not malfunction or stop functioning. In other words, they must have electromagnetic compatibility (EMC*1). In recent years, regulations on EMC have been strengthened globally, which has made EMC increasingly important.

Consequently, in December 2013, Shimadzu completed construction of the Quality Center, which is equipped with a large anechoic chamber to perform EMC certification testing for Shimadzu products using the 10 m method. Now Shimadzu has received ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation from the Japan Accreditation Board (JAB). This accreditation means Shimadzu can now issue their own EMC certification test reports that are valid in 72 regions and countries.*2
To ensure measurements are accurate, all personnel involved in EMC certification testing are iNARTE-certified. (iNARTE is an abbreviation of the International Association for Radio, Telecommunications and Electromagnetics.)

Previously, EMC testing was outsourced to an outside facility, but doing it in-house provides flexibility and makes it easier to examine EMC measures at an earlier stage of development, which has helped shorten the development time. Also, due to the accumulation of expertise regarding EMC testing, it should help increase the overall technical level of the entire company with respect to EMC.

*1 Anechoic chamber: A shielded room designed and constructed so that it is able to reflect away any electromagnetic waves from the outside and absorb any electromagnetic waves generated inside the room.
