The Shim-pack XR series columns use a 2.2-µm packing that features an excellent overall balance of separation performance, durability, column pressure, and other characteristics. Therefore, it has become popular as a column that enables ultra fast analysis with lower solvent consumption, even on existing HPLC systems. Now three new models have been added to the Shim-pack XR series - the Shim-pack XR-C8 (octyl), Shim-pack XR-Phenyl (phenylpropyl), and Shim-pack XR-SIL (silica gel).
The 2.2-µm column offers faster line speeds than columns packed with conventional 5-µm packing, without sacrificing the number of theoretical plates. Therefore, it is able to increase the speed of any application not using an ODS column or increase the speed and save solvent through replacement by any non-ODS column. Unlike ODS columns, the behavior of retained substances is predictable, so it can be used for a wide range of applications.

Shim-pack XR-C8 Analysis Example

This is an example of analyzing fat soluble vitamins E (tocopherol) and A (retinal). Not only was the speed increased compared to the column with 5-µm packing particle size, but in such cases of multianalyte analysis with high fat solubility, it is possible to achieve even further increases in analysis speed compared to ODS columns, due to differences in retention characteristics. In the figure below, the speed was increased for peak 2 (retinal), which was difficult if using the XR-ODS.

Shim-pack XR-Phenyl Analysis Example

This is an example of analyzing nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Since the stationary phase has a phenyl functional group, retention of aromatic compounds is relatively strong compared to ODS columns. This fact can be utilized to optimize separation. This provides an alternative when faced with separation problems using an ODS column.

Shim-pack XR-SIL Analysis Example

The Shim-pack XR-SIL enables increasing speed and saving solvent for normal phase analyses using a silica gel column packed with 5 µm particles (conventional column). Since organic solvents are used for normal phase analyses, the benefit of saving solvent is greater than for reverse phase analysis.
