Microscopic CFRP Analysis Utilizing the SPM Method

Evaluation of Thermophysical Properties in Microscopic Regions

The new SPM + nano-TA2 Combined Nano Thermal Analysis System employs a new method of applying scanning probe microscopy. In addition to the analysis of glass transition temperatures and fusion temperatures for submicron regions, this system can be used for the analysis of heat conduction. Conventional thermal analysis test methods could not obtain the thermophysical properties of only the fiber or resin components of CFRP (optical photograph below) or other composite materials, due to issues with the probe diameter and test position specification accuracy. This system makes such measurements possible. (Sample: UD laminate [0]2) Testing was implemented on the central resin part in the optical image below.

The traces arranged in a cross shape in the AFM image (top right) are the test locations. In addition to showing that it is possible to test only the resin part while avoiding the CF (Carbon Fiber), the test results (upper left graph) reveal that the glass transition temperature differs with the distance from the resin. SPM + nano-TA2 Combined Nano Thermal Analysis System

Combining the Anasys Instruments nano-TA2 nano thermal analysis system with the SPM-9700 enables observation of the 3-dimensional shape of a sample surface, as well as pinpoint thermal analysis. It is now possible to analyze the thermal properties of submicron-level microscopic regions and outer surfaces only, analyses that were impossible with thermal analyzers to date.
