High-Speed High-Separation Analysis of Crude Drugs – HPLC

Crude drugs are ingredients that make medicinal use of animals and plants. They have been passed down as habitually used drugs throughout history, and are widely used in herbal medicines even today.
In recent years, the efficacy of herbal medicines has come to be validated, and components obtained from crude drugs, which are the basis of herbal medicines, have frequently been used to create pharmaceuticals.
Generally, in the analysis of crude drugs using HPLC, it is necessary to separate the active ingredients from a number of contaminants. Therefore, the analysis process takes a comparatively long time. However, analysis can be performed in a short time by using an ultra-fast LC system and high-speed high-separation columns.
Illustrated here is the high-speed analysis of berberine and palmatine,alkaloids contained in phellodendron bark,using the Prominence UFLC ultra-fast LC system and the Shim-pack XR-ODS high-speed, high-separation column.

With an HPLC, liquid is passed through the flow lines of the analytical unit, and the sample is then introduced into a separation tube called a "column" where it is separated into its components.
The amount of components is measured by a detector.
Using an Ultra-fast HPLC System (UFLC) in combination,with a high-speed high separation column ensures that analysis times can be shortened to 1/10 that of general-purpose LCs without compromising high separation and reproducibility.
