Determination of Cadmium in the Tap Water by FlamelessAtomic Absorption Spectrometry

The standard for the allowable concentration ofcadmium in tap water has been revised downwardfrom 0.01 mg/L or less to 0.003 mg/L or less accordingto Japan's "Ministerial Ordinance for Partial Revisionof the Ordinance Concerning the Water QualityStandard" (The Ministry of Health, Labour and WelfareOrdinance No.18) (February 17, 2010). The revisedstandard has been in effect since April 1, 2010.Here we introduce an example of flameless atomicabsorption analysis of tap water spiked with cadmiumat 1/10 the concentration specified in the revisedordinance, using the certified river water referencematerial JAC 0302 (spiked) provided by The JapanSociety for Analytical Chemistry. In addition, theconvenient automatic dilution and re-analysis functionis introduced.
