Determination of Volatile Organic Compounds in Water-based Paints and Varnishes Using GC-MS

In response to the recent demand for the development and analysis of paints and varnishes with low content of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), a method using GC-MS was developed to determine the amount of VOCs. This method was modified based on ISO 11890-2:2013. The method takes into account quantitation of 35 VOCs commonly found in paint. Method validation demonstrated a wide range of calibration with good correlative coefficient, as well as good reproducibility. The method was shown to be applicable to different commercial paint samples.
