Determination of Geographical Origin of Agricultural Products by Smart Metabolites Database™

An experiment concerning determination of the geographical origin of food products by a comprehensive analysis of their metabolites was conducted using asparagus as an example. The experimental samples consisted of 58 samples of asparagus produced domestically in Japan and 48 produced in other countries. The metabolites of each sample were extracted and subjected to a comprehensive analysis using the Smart Metabolites Database. In order to apply machine learning to determination, somewhat special rules were adopted for peak picking. (Creation of the model by machine learning was described in Application News No. M282.) As a result, a system that enables determination with accuracy of more than 90% was established.
