Shock waves visualized Ultra-high-speed camera

Explosions or other highspeedphenomena causedramatic pressure increasesresulting in strong pressure waves, commonly referred to as shockwaves. In the aeronautics industry, for instance, knowledge of theorigin and propagation of shockwaves is extremely important inorder to understand how shockwaves arise on the wings of supersonicjets and how these wavesproliferate. When airplanes flyfaster than the speed of sound(sound velocity 343 m/s = 1,225km/h at 20 °C air temperature) theresulting shock waves exhibitnumerous additional effects. Visualizingshock waves in order to beable to study their propagation andeffects is very important in currentaeronautics research.
