World-Leading 5D Ultra-e LC-GCxGC-MS/MS System Provides Five-Dimensional, Precise, Comprehensive Analysis of Extremely Complex Samples
Shimadzu announces the release of its 5D Ultra-e LC-GCxGC-MS/MS system. The system represents a realization of a design conceived by the team of Prof. Dr. Luigi Mondello, a world-renowned chromatography researcher at the University of Messina and Chromaleont S.r.l. in Italy. The 5D Ultra-e is the only system in the world to offer high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GCxGC), and triple quadruple mass spectrometry (MS/MS), all connected and online to provide for five-dimensional analysis. This is the optimum analysis tool for any leading-edge research facility where the comprehensive, precise analysis of extremely complicated samples is performed.
GCxGC can be used to comprehensively measure samples that include a diverse range of components that cannot be separated using conventional gas chromatography. It accomplishes this by combining separation systems that have different characteristics. This system adds an LC unit in front of the GCxGC system for sample preparation and pre-separation purposes. Dividing sample components in advance, into groups according to their chemical characteristics, enables even more detailed GCxGC analyses of extremely complex samples. After a sample has been separated using LC, the sub-samples are large-volume-injected online into the GCxGC system, resulting in increased sensitivity and enhanced throughput and stability.
For detection, the system adopts the GCMS-TQ8040 triple quadrupole gas chromatograph mass spectrometer from the Ultra Fast Mass Spectrometry (UFMS) series. Components separated using GCxGC can be analyzed in further detail using MS/MS, which features ultra-high-speed functionality and ultra-high sensitivity. The MS/MS instrument enables both untargeted and targeted analyses, which can be performed simultaneously in the same run. For targeted determinations, it is possible to quantify specific components within a complex sample, at ultra-trace concentrations.
Dedicated 5D Solution software provides consolidated management of all of the instruments. This software achieves two major milestones; analysis at an unprecedented level of power and an ease-of-use that makes it possible to start an analysis with just one click.
