Shimadzu Corporation has released the XDimensus 300, its first X-ray CT system for dimensional measurements. This system is capable of obtaining CT images of samples (workpieces targeted for inspection) using X-rays, and measuring their internal dimensions with high accuracy.
This industrial X-ray CT system can obtain three-dimensional fluoroscopic images (CT images) of the interior of samples via X-rays, measure the internal and external dimensions of samples, and determine their volumes by deriving coordinate values from these CT images.
The XDimensus 300 was developed in collaboration with the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan. As a dimensional X-ray CT system, it provides the highest level of measurement accuracy in Japan, with a maximum permissible indication error of ±3.8 to 9.8 µm (depending on the measured dimensions). At the same time, it enables observations with the highest level of resolution in Japan, comparable to the inspeXio SMX-225CT FPD HR, Shimadzu's flagship microfocus X-ray CT system. The XDimensus 300 is expected to contribute to improving work efficiency and quality control accuracy in various processes, such as the verification of technical drawings and the inspections of resin molded goods and aluminum processed goods in the automotive and electronic parts industries.
Shimadzu delivered the prototype for this product to the National Metrology Institute of Japan (NMIJ) at AIST. The knowledge obtained in collaboration with NMIJ was then used to develop this product. At NMIJ, this prototype is being used to develop international standards related to methods for evaluating the performance of dimensional X-ray CT systems. Measures are being taken to enable the enactment of requirements for measurements using dimensional X-ray CT systems in the ISO-10360 international standards, before 2020.
Background to the Development
With the expansion of the automobile component market and the smart phone component market, the diversification of design tools, and the increasing accuracy of machine tools, the structure and form of various industrial products are becoming increasingly complex. Accordingly, the time spent in verifying whether products have been completed as specified in their technical design drawings is increasing. From these trends, dimensional X-ray CT systems, which can obtain data on the dimensions and volume of test samples, including their interiors, using X-rays and image processing, are becoming a focus of interest. In addition, in recent years, there has been a proliferation of 3D printers, which are capable of outputting modeled objects with complicated structures, heightening the importance of internal measurements.
Against this background, and utilizing its many years of experience with X-ray inspection and image processing technology Shimadzu has developed the XDimensus 300 and commercialized it as a dimensional X-ray CT system.
1. Top Level of Measurement Accuracy in Japan
This system provides the highest level of dimensional measurement accuracy assurance in Japan, with a maximum permissible indication error of ±3.8 to 9.8 µm (depending on the measured dimensions). This is calculated based on VDI/VDE 2630 Part 1.3, prescribed by the Verein Deutscher Ingenieure.
2. Top Level of Observational Capacity in Japan
This system enables observations with the highest level of resolution in Japan, comparable to the inspeXio SMX-225CT FPD HR, our flagship microfocus X-ray CT system. It is equipped with our proprietary X-ray generator, which offers excellent penetration power to enable high contrast observations of samples with a wide range of materials, from resins such as carbon fiber reinforced plastics to aluminum and other metals.
3. Superior Usability
The XDimensus 300 can measure samples up to 300 mm in diameter by 300 mm in height and with a maximum weight of 10 kg, and X-ray scanning can be started with ease, without complicated parameter settings. In addition, it includes functions to maintain the internal temperature at 20 °C and to detect and notify the user of status errors, simplifying operation for users.
