Nadeshiko Brand

The Nadeshiko Brand is selected by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Tokyo Stock Exchange in each industry from all companies listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange on a yearly basis using an index of companies that actively promote the role of women in the workplace. This year, 23 companies were selected from across Japan. Shimadzu was evaluated as a company in the electrical and precision industry category.

In terms of selection standards, in addition to a quantitative evaluation of the number of female executives and administrators, companies are assessed with a qualitative evaluation including their corporate value creation story. This involves "career formation support from hiring through to job assignment," "support for both parties, regardless of gender, enabling dual income families and dual childrearing," and "connections between management strategies and human resource strategies including the involvement of women in the company."

The Nadeshiko Brand indicates that the brand is distinguished as a company that is striving to actively promote women within the workplace, thereby aiming to heighten investor interest and further accelerate measures to promote the involvement of women at each company.

Points Evaluated at Shimadzu

Of the many companies hoping to be selected, Shimadzu scored particularly well on the following four points.

  • Focus on the female manager ratio as a management strategy, and the pursuit of this as a target.
  • Strong commitment from the top management that all executives express their messages to the employees.
  • Sense that these initiatives are tied to business results.
  • Through promotion projects and systematic educational programs, a strong desire is fostered in women themselves to pursue a career, leading the female manager ratio to steadily improve.

This evaluation concerns the active promotion of women within the workplace. However, by maximizing diversity on an individual basis, irrespective of gender, the Shimadzu Group is creating innovation together with all its stakeholders, aiming to continue to resolve societal challenges.

Initiatives Tied to the Active Promotion of Women within the Workplace

Shimadzu promotes a variety of initiatives to actively promote women within the workplace. Being selected as a Nadeshiko Brand 2025 is an important step in showing these results.

Here we introduce specific initiatives at Shimadzu including programs to support career formation and management personnel training for women.

Discussion with female executives

In conjunction with International Women’s Day, a WSW Meet-UP is hosted, targeting participants in WSW training. Through discussions with female executives, training promotes DE&I-related attitudes and behavior from a personal perspective.

DE&I training for all managers "Diversity is Power": The instructor was the Director in charge of diversity management.
In this training, the participants think about diversity management by themselves through repeated discussions on the basics of DE&I, approaches to management strategies, unconscious biases, and psychological safety.

Comments from the DE&I Promotion Group

The ratio of female employees, managers, and executives has steadily increased in comparison to 2015 when the project started. However, the aim of "Embracing Differences and Using Individual Strengths to Achieve a Stronger Organization," our corporate ideal, cannot be realized simply through quantitative activity by women.

While maintaining an emphasis on activity by women, it is important to construct an environment in which every employee can be active in their own way. Applying for selection as a Nadeshiko Brand, an annual event, is an important opportunity to take a commanding view of the current situation at Shimadzu, and to learn about the issues facing us.

Being selected for the first time in three years enabled us to learn how DE&I promotion by the Shimadzu Group, aiming at "personalized diversity," is viewed by broader society. Based on these results, we will take measures earnestly to strengthen management strategies by the Group as a whole, to ensure that further growth continues.
