Overview of Pittcon

“Pittcon” is an academic conference and exhibition hosted by the Pittsburgh Conference on Analytical Chemistry and Applied Spectroscopy, Inc. It was started in 1949 as a forum for presentations about analytical research results and the latest scientific instruments.

Since the main purpose of the event is to promote interactions and the exchange of scientific information, the fact that revenues are reinvested in scientific education and outreach activities makes Pittcon quite different than other typical exhibitions with commercial objectives. Therefore, funds are donated toward expanding the scope of science, such as by offering scientific instrument grants, research grants, and academic scholarships.

Pittcon is held in a different U.S. city each year, but this is the first year it was held in Boston, Massachusetts. One reason for locating the event in Boston this year was to benefit from synergies with advanced technologies available at the concentration of over 45 universities and over 1000 biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies in Boston. With “Connect. Cultivate. Collaborate.” as the theme this year, there were over 450 exhibitors, over 1000 meetings, and over 500 poster presentations.

Preparations are already progressing for Pittcon 2026 next year, to be held in San Antonio, Texas, one of the fastest growing regions in the United States. The region also has advanced bioscience, aerospace, and green alternative energy industries.

To promote communication with biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, SSI mainly exhibited a Brevis GC-2050 gas chromatograph, an LCMS RX series liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer, and a MALDI EasyCare mass spectrometer.

The booth with key visuals emphasizing the 150th anniversary of the founding of Shimadzu and the HPLC and GC systems decorated with Kyoto’s traditional lacquer and gold ceramic repair craftwork resulted in a unique exhibition based on a fusion of aesthetic beauty and scientific technology typical of Kyoto.

At the press event, SSI highlighted its 50th anniversary and announced three new UV spectrophotometer models.

At Pittcon 2025, SSI employee Heather Juzwa served as the President in charge of coordinating event operations. Pittcon events are run by industry volunteers, with the President having a central role.

Heather Juzwa first became involved at Pittcon 2000 when she volunteered as a student aide in New Orleans. In recognition of her over 20 years of experience supporting Pittcon since then, she was appointed to serve the major role of President.

Comments by Heather Juzwa

As we approached Pittcon 2025, I was bursting with pride and anticipation. My first “real job” was when I volunteered as a student aide at Pittcon 2000 in New Orleans. For me, becoming President was one of the highest honors of my career.

It makes me happy to think that Pittcon has provided opportunities for participants like you to be stimulated by information obtained and to become more motivated. By creating a forum for engaging in a wide variety of educational programs and interactions, the event generates connections with other participants.

Over the past 75 years, Pittcon has continuously evolved, adapting to the ever-changing needs of our scientific community. Knowing that this incredible community of passionate individuals is coming together to support something far greater than ourselves is nothing short of beautiful.
