Joint Establishment of the UCAS-SHIMADZU Environmental Health Innovation Center with the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences
Shimadzu (China) Co., Ltd. (SSL), a Shimadzu Group company in China, has newly established the UCAS-SHIMADZU Environmental Health Innovation Center in the School of Environment at Hangzhou Institute for Advanced Study (HIAS), University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) and held the opening ceremony on April 25. SSL will strengthen its collaboration with Chinese researchers in the environmental field and deepen its involvement in this area.

A New Hub for Environmental Analysis
Representatives from UCAS and SSL unveiling the center
The HIAS at the UCAS was established in 2019 in response to growing concerns about environmental issues in China. The institute promotes “the advancement of scientific and technological innovation and deep collaboration between industry, academia, and government,” with a particular focus on environmental protection and health issues. In 2020, the School of Environment, an educational and research institution specializing in the environment, was set up within the HIAS. It was established based on the research resources and expertise of the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Science at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a leading institution in this area.
Hangzhou, where the UCAS-SHIMADZU Environmental Health Innovation Center has been established, is the capital of Zhejiang Province and a city that has produced numerous innovations. It is expected to become a hub for environmental analysis related to water quality, soil, and air in the future. By jointly establishing a new research and development base in Hangzhou, Shimadzu aims to strengthen collaboration with Chinese researchers in the environmental field and deepen our expertise in this area.
The laboratories in the UCAS-SHIMADZU Environmental Health Innovation Center are equipped with Shimadzu LCMS-8060NX and LCMS-9050 liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer, GCMS-TQ8050NX gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, EDX-7200 energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, and ICPMS-2050 inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. These instruments support research into the identification of environmental pollutants, analysis of toxicity mechanisms, and prevention and management of health risks.
SSL has been deepening its collaboration with key opinion leaders in the environmental field to contribute to solving environmental issues. For example, with Professor Yawei Wang, a leading researcher in PFAS environmental analysis (Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences), SSL has jointly developed and commercialized a database of PFAS analysis methods using LC-MS. SSL will continue to promote these developments in line with environmental regulatory needs in the Chinese market.
Industry-Academia Collaboration toward the “Well-being of Mankind and the Earth”
The opening ceremony of the UCAS-SHIMADZU Environmental Health Innovation Center was held on April 25 as part of the HIAS-Shimadzu Environment and Health Innovation Forum co-hosted by SSL and the HIAS. This forum, themed on scientific and technological innovation in the fields of environment and health, was attended by over 60 experts and representatives from research institutions, universities, and companies.
Representatives from both organizations delivered the following remarks.
Zheng Chonghui, Executive Vice President and Researcher, HIAS, UCAS
A good ecological environment is the most universal benefit for people’s lives. The School of Environment, one of the four core fields at the HIAS, focuses on three major scientific research areas: environmental analysis and the processes and mechanisms of new pollutants, toxicity and health, and pollution prevention and health protection systems. We promote applied basic research, training of specialized human resources, and the social implementation of research results in these fields.
International scientific and technological cooperation is the way forward, and the establishment of the UCAS-SHIMADZU Environmental Health Innovation Center is an essential requirement for addressing global issues.
We look forward to deepening the global cooperative relationship between HIAS and Shimadzu, exploring new paths towards sustainable development, and contributing to global environmental governance.
SSL President Koki Aoyama
Environment and health are core issues in modern society. As a company with world-leading analytical technology, we are not only providing high-precision instruments but also focusing on the development of innovative analytical methods in collaboration with our Chinese partners.
The UCAS-SHIMADZU Environmental Health Innovation Center will focus on research and development in cutting-edge fields such as the study of new pollutants and risk assessment for environmental and health issues. We will also promote the social implementation of these results.
By integrating Shimadzu’s advanced instruments with the high level of expertise in research at the HIAS, we anticipate that this center will contribute to China’s efforts to build a sustainable society.
Participants in the Environment and Health Innovation Forum
To realize our wishes for the well-being of mankind and the Earth and contribute to society, Shimadzu Group will never cease taking on new challenges.
