What is “bauma”?

“bauma” is one of the world’s largest construction machinery trade fairs

“bauma” is one of the world’s largest construction machinery trade fairs, that is held in Germany. The name was formed from a combination of the German “bau” (construction) and “maschinerie” (machinery).

Starting in 1954, bauma is now held once every three years. Together with “Intermat” in France and “Conexpo-Con/Agg” in the USA, they are referred to as the world’s largest construction machinery trade fairs, that are on a large scale like no others. According to an announcement by the organizers, bauma 2025 had about 600,000 visitors and about 3,600 exhibitors.

Shimadzu Booth: Sustainability, Carbon Neutrality

Shimadzu has exhibited here continuously since 2019, and this was its third time. The work of construction machinery, such as excavation, transport, and lifting, requires a lot of power. The hydraulic equipment that Shimadzu manufactures, such as pumps and valves, plays the role of moving machines by transmitting power using the flow and pressure of oil. This is equipment that can move a large object with a small force.

The theme of this exhibition was “Sustainability, Carbon Neutrality,” and Shimadzu introduced solutions that can contribute to environmental protection in the construction industry by providing hydraulic components that produce high performance while using little energy.

Also, reducing the operating noise of hydraulic equipment with Shimadzu’s noise reduction technology improves the working environment for construction machinery operators. At the booth, we emphasized that the product's features of high durability and high performance contribute to reducing CO2 emissions over the lifetime of customers' machines.

Manufacture of Equipment Using Renewable Energy

In 2021, Shimadzu Corporation joined the global environmental initiative RE100, declaring that by 2050, the Shimadzu Group will source 100 % of the electricity used in its business activities both in Japan and overseas from renewable energy sources. In FY 2023, 85 % of the electricity consumed by the Shimadzu Group was from renewable energy sources.

Seta Works (Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture), which is the plant that manufactures hydraulic equipment, also uses electricity from renewable energy. Shimadzu manufactures products that are environmentally friendly from the design and manufacturing stages, in addition to product performance.
