Exhibiting the Latest Technology at Kyoto Smart City Expo 2025

Shimadzu Corporation exhibited at Kyoto Smart City Expo 2025, held at the Keihanna Open Innovation Center @KYOTO (KICK) on October 2 and 3. 

Kyoto Smart City Expo

Kyoto Smart City Expo is an international event held annually since 2014 to foster new innovations for the implementation of smart cities. This year, Food Tech Expo was held simultaneously with Smart City Expo, on the theme of “Regions and industries to create a sustainable and livable future—Creating a ‘Meta-Comfort’ smart society—.” There were many exhibits by businesses, startups, overseas governmental agencies, and municipalities.

Exhibition of Solutions Supporting Human Health

At the Shimadzu booth, solutions to support human health were featured. Panel displays introduced the HuME multi-device biometric system and the SUPOFULL health promotion platform, while an actual AGEs sensor—an instrument that measures the level of accumulation of advanced glycation end products within the body—was exhibited. As part of various food-related solutions, we showcased instruments such as liquid chromatograph mass spectrometers, which support the analysis of functional food components and the development of new functional foods, and gas chromatograph mass spectrometers, which help quantitatively manage food quality by analyzing characteristic aroma compounds.

Released in April, HuME is Shimadzu’s new multi-device biometric system that integrates multiple physiological signals—such as myopotentials, heart rate, electrocardiograms, electroencephalograms, and movement—with video data. In doing so, the system supports the interpretation of human mental states, sensitivities, and emotions. Kenji Kimura, who was in charge of its commercialization, gave an address during the Smart City Expo session. 

Introduction to Initiatives by Biocommunity Kansai

Natsuhara Masahito gave an address regarding initiatives by Biocommunity Kansai, an organization in which Shimadzu takes part. Biocommunity Kansai is an organization in the Kansai area that promotes activities with the objective of forming a community aimed at the implementation of a bioeconomic society, based on the Bio Strategy 2020 by the Cabinet Office of Japan. Shimadzu serves as a leading organization for the society’s Subcommittee on Analysis and Measurement Technology. A symposium was also held in July of this year.

Toward the Development of an International City of Culture and Academic Research Empathy, Resonance, and Co-Creation as Keywords

In addition, Teruhisa Ueda, Representative Director and Chairman, Shimadzu Corporation, gave an address on the theme of “How to create the future society—Expectations for the post-Expo City—.” Ueda stated that in order for Keihanna Science City to be recognized as an international city of culture and academic research, three keywords are essential: empathy, resonance, and co-creation. He explained that “empathy serves as the starting point that spreads recognition, resonance is vital for expanding the network further, and co-creation with partners around the world leads to continued development.”
