Working Together to Promote Employee Well-being and Contributing to the Well-being of Mankind and the Earth
Well-being: A state of physical and mental well-being, where one feels fulfilled and enriched in all aspects of life. Yoshino Kajitani (Managing Executive Officer), who is in charge of health management at Shimadzu Corporation, together with staff from the Planning & Management Center of Employee Healthcare & Safety Workplace at Human Resources Department, is working to create a company where employees pursue well-being and can continue working while feeling healthy and fulfilled.

This year, Shimadzu Corporation was selected for the fourth time in the “KENKO Investment for Health Stock Selection” and has been certified as a “White 500” KENKO Investment for Health Outstanding Organization for 10 consecutive years.

In addition, Shimadzu Group companies Shimadzu Access Corporation, Shimadzu Logistics Service Corporation, and Taiheikogyo Co., Ltd. have also been certified as a KENKO Investment for Health Outstanding Organization 2026 (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Category). Shimadzu’s overseas Group companies also run programs that promote healthy lifestyles through diet and exercise while encouraging communication among employees.

Strengthening its Commitment to Physical and Mental Health
Shimadzu Corporation issued its Health Declaration in 2017, and this year marks its 10th anniversary. In recent years, it has placed particular emphasis on preventing cardiovascular disease.
Elevated levels of blood lipids, blood glucose, blood pressure, and abnormal liver function test results increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Therefore, Shimadzu Corporation evaluates employees’ health checkup results using Shimadzu’s proprietary Arteriosclerosis Score, developed under the supervision of the National Hospital Organization Kyoto Medical Center. For those identified as high risk, it performs carotid ultrasound examinations to visually assess and help prevent three issues: arterial stiffening, narrowing, and occlusion. By combining this with health counseling, Shimadzu promotes understanding of atherosclerosis risk, facilitates early detection and treatment, and encourages behavioral changes to improve lifestyle habits.
Cardiovascular disease is the second leading cause of death in Japan. Even when lives are saved, these diseases often require a period of medical leave and can impair daily living; therefore, early intervention contributes to maintaining employees’ health.

Helping Employees Stay Healthy and Productive
Based on Shimadzu’s long-standing commitment and experience in health promotion, it promotes employee awareness and self-directed health management through programs focused on exercise, nutrition, sleep, mental well-being, and stopping smoking. Furthermore, Shimadzu Corporation leverages its technologies to support the health of employees and their families. It provides financial support for the “MCI Screening Course Plus”—a test to assess the risk of mild cognitive impairment, a precursor to Alzheimer’s disease—and for breast cancer screenings using a dedicated breast PET system.

Last year, Shimadzu Corporation established its proprietary Well-being Index. This index quantifies the proportion of employees with a high level of health awareness based on its annual employee health awareness survey. It takes into account awareness of their own health, changes and habituation of behaviors such as diet and exercise, and the frequency with which they encourage health-conscious actions among colleagues and those around them. By evaluating individual Well-being Index scores annually, Shimadzu Corporation aims to be a company where employees can continue working in good health, feel fulfilled and secure, are provided with opportunities for growth, and can demonstrate their abilities with confidence.

Comment from Yoshino Kajitani (Managing Executive Officer) in Charge of Health Management
Based on our management principle of Realizing Our Wishes for the Well-being of Mankind and the Earth, we regard the physical and mental health of each employee as the foundation for sustainable company growth and long-term corporate value. Accordingly, we consider employee health management a key investment in our workforce. By analyzing a broad range of health data, we visualize health conditions at the company, organizational, and individual levels, and address various health challenges by leveraging our employees’ expertise, our technologies, and external collaborations. We aim to create an environment that supports employee well-being, where employees can continue working, make the most of their abilities, and feel healthy and fulfilled. Shimadzu will continue to take a leading role in health management.
Comment from Kiyomi Arakawa (General Manager), Planning & Management Center of Employee Healthcare & Safety Workplace, Human Resources Department
Led by our occupational physicians, we advance these initiatives together with public health nurses, psychologists, hygiene managers and safety managers, administrative staff, and the nurses, pharmacists, and radiological technologists of our in-house clinic, in cooperation with the Shimadzu Corporation Health Insurance Association. Our long-standing, steady efforts to protect and improve employee health have led to our fourth selection as a “KENKO Investment for Health Stock Selection” and our inclusion in the “White 500” KENKO Investment for Health Outstanding Organization list for 10 consecutive years. We will continue to share information from various perspectives to encourage employees to improve lifestyle habits such as diet and exercise, to quickly notice physical and mental health issues, and to enable early detection and treatment.
