Abstract

In recent years, developments are anticipated in the field of regenerative medicine products that use cells as the thera-peutic agent and drug discovery screening with disease-specific iPS cells. To industrialize these developments, we need technology capable of providing a stable supply of high-quality cells in large quantities. However, manual work and intui-tive judgment still play a major role in the cell cultivation that produces these cells and poses a barrier to automating the production process. In this article, we focus on two routine tasks in running cell cultures, cell removal and cell collection (colony picking), and automate these tasks by the horizontal development of a core technology of liquid chromatography. We learned this technique can help improve work efficiency not only in the cultivation of iPS cells but also in the process of cloning by genome editing. Furthermore, by automating other processes before and after cell removal and collection and by expanding the use of techniques such as image analysis, we also look forward to linking together a total solution for cell culture production.
