Abstract

TOC measurement in pure water at the μg/L scale is in increasing demand due to stringent quality controls for pharmaceuticals and sophisticated in-process cleaning for semiconductors. Recently, on-line TOC analyzers suitable for continuous monitoring of operations in a pure water production process that pose minimal risk of contamination during sampling are of particular interest. Shimadzu’s eTOC is the world’s smallest and lightest on-line TOC analyzer for pure water. The eTOC uses a mercury -free excimer lamp and is designed with maintenance and utility as a priority, having a calibrator and premade standard solutions. The eTOC also offers high levels of security with user authentication and operational logs. This article presents the results from TOC measurements taken using the eTOC at several tens of μg/L in a plant producing pure water for pharmaceuticals and at 1 μg/L in an ultra pure water production plant, along with the results of system suitability testing using the United States Pharmacopoeia <643> method.
