Shimadzu Review 81[3・4] (2024)
Abstract
The recipe for reaching 100 years of age in good health extends beyond medical care and involves important lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, and sleep. Of these, the impact of a balanced diet on human health is an area of growing interest.
Shimadzu has been working with Japan’s National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) to analyze and identify the functional constituents of food. In 2022, Shimadzu and NARO founded the Self Care Food Council with the aim of pursuing “Personalized Nutrition,” the concept of offering every individual an optimized nutritional plan based on their lifestyle and health patterns. The Self Care Food Council has since established a scheme for certifying “G-Plus” foods based on scientific evidence that shows which nutrients tend to be deficient in Japanese people. The Self Care Food Council is also examining the relationship between food and cognitive function through its participation in the “Ebetsu Active Future Study,” a research project led by Ebetsu City that aims to reduce the risk of mild cognitive impairment in an aging society.
By developing measuring instruments and healthy foods based on scientific evidence, helping to gather data, and establishing frameworks aimed at solving societal issues, Shimadzu and NARO hope to create a healthy and long-lived society through food.
