Shimadzu Review 81[3・4] (2024)

Abstract

As Japanese society and the wider world face a variety of modern challenges, such as the increasing prevalence of lifestyle diseases and aging societies, the market for health-oriented foods appears to be particularly strong. In agricultur-al circles throughout Japan, there is also a growing trend toward improving market competitiveness by developing agri-cultural products and foods that help people maintain or improve their health. The Japanese national government is also giving support to the agricultural and food industries via regional development aimed at expanding future exports. In light of these social trends, Shimadzu and the National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO) has been promoting collaboration and cooperation aiming to drive innovation and make a positive impact on society through food. This article reports on the development of an analytical method that can be used to screen and semi-quantitatively ana-lyze agricultural crops for functional components. This analytical method could play a useful role in the breeding and cultivation of functionally rich agricultural crops and help develop the functional foods market.
