Shimadzu Review 81[3・4] (2024)

Abstract

In Japan, the Food Sanitation Act sets forth compositional standards for coliform bacteria levels in milk and dairy products. In the food sector, there is an urgent need to shorten testing times and expedite results, particularly for perish-able items such as milk and dairy products.
CompactDry is a media system that is easy to use, requires no media preparation, generates less waste than conven-tional methods, includes a range of options supporting a variety of tests, and offers a long shelf life at room tempera-ture. CompactDry CF and EC media systems are also available for coliform enumeration, but these systems give test results in 24±2 hours, which is similar to the conventional method using VRB agar medium.
We have developed a new product, CompactDry CFR, specifically designed for the rapid enumeration of coliforms. A performance assessment conducted in accordance with ISO 16140-2:2016 has demonstrated that CompactDry CFR offers rapid, specific, and selective quantification of coliform bacteria in raw and processed dairy products. Compact-Dry CFR gives results comparable to the ISO 4832:2006 reference method within 16 to 18 hours and has been awarded MicroVal certification.
