Shimadzu Review 82[1・2] (2025)

Abstract

Shimadzu’s mass spectrometry business, which began with the launch of a GC-MS system in partnership with LKB in 1970, is now a key concern at Shimadzu. Since the launch of its first GC-MS system, Shimadzu has developed and launched a variety of different mass spectrometers, including quadrupole mass spectrometers for GC-MS and LC-MS systems, a Nobel prize-winning laser ionization-TOF mass spectrometer, hybrid quadrupole-TOF mass spectrometers, and MS microscopes. Growth of the mass spectrometry business at Shimadzu has been driven by global technological development and its ensuing market expansion. This article looks back at how Shimadzu has confronted new product development in the context of global technological development and market trends.
