Shimadzu Review 82[1・2] (2025)
Abstract
Shimadzu Corporation has developed two fluorescence imaging systems, LuminousQuester NI and LuminousQuester NX, for the study of near-infrared photoimmunotherapy (NIR-PIT), an emerging cancer treatment modality. These systems visualize fluorescence emitted by IRDye700DX (IR700), a photosensitive dye that forms part of the drugs used in NIR-PIT. Leveraging Shimadzuʼs near-infrared imaging technology, the two imaging systems are capable of capturing images of IR700 fluorescence and visible images simultaneously, even under ambient light conditions, and displaying changes in fluorescence intensity in real time. This allows researchers to (i) quantify drug accumulation before and after therapeutic light irradiation and (ii) monitor drug photoreaction kinetics during therapeutic light irradiation.
This article outlines NIR-PIT and the role of fluorescence imaging in NIR-PIT research, describes the design and features of the two imaging systems, and presents example non-clinical and clinical research data.
