Eco-Initiatives at Shimadzu from Environmental Conservation to a Carbon-Free Society and Biomanufacturing
Shimadzu Review 82[1・2] (2025)
Abstract
Shimadzu is working to address climate change by developing analytical and measurement technology that helps hasten the goal of a carbon-free society. Shimadzu is specifically focused on a diverse range of research and develop-ment challenges in biomanufacturing where CO2 is used as a feedstock, such as producing bioethanol from non-edible biomass and direct polymer synthesis from microorganisms. High performance liquid chromatographs and gas chro-matographs are key to creating solutions to these challenges, while efficient monitoring technology and quality control are also critical to these endeavors. At the newly-opened Shimadzu Kobe Innovation Lab, Shimadzu is building a smart foundry incorporating AI and robotic technology to accelerate development cycles and more quickly develop products with practical applications. Shimadzu is also collaborating with domestic and foreign businesses and research institu-tions to help develop new technologies, develop these technologies for practical applications, and, with governmental support, help develop a model of the global carbon cycle.
