Early Detection through Industry-Academia Collaboration
Shimadzu Review 82[3・4] (2026)
Abstract
After establishing a comprehensive partnership with the Jikei University, Shimadzu Corporation has been collaborating with the Jikei University School of Medicine to tackle osteoporosis through a strategy that combines mass spectrometry technology and medical imaging technology. Automated liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry technology was used to accurately quantify levels of vitamin D metabolite in adults who underwent medical checkups in Tokyo. Of the 5518 individuals analyzed, 98% showed vitamin D deficiency. AI technology (Smart QM™, Shimadzu) enables immediate quantitative morphometric measurements of the thoracic and lumbar vertebrae from X-ray images and easier assessment of vertebral fractures. The proof-of-concept study of a new bone screening strategy combining these two technologies yielded promising results for early detection of osteoporosis and improving awareness of lifestyle changes. We will continue this comprehensive approach to bone health that encompasses health management, diagnosis, and prognosis management, developing technology with the goal of bone fracture prevention and extending healthy life expectancy.
