Introduction

Palm oil is an edible oil extracted from the fruit of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Due to the abundance of oil palm in Southeast Asia and Africa, as well as its relatively lower cost, palm oil has become one of the largest contributors to the global oil market. Crude palm oil (CPO) is usually refined, deodorized and bleached for wider usages such as domestic cooking and food processing. The quality of processed palm oil is governed by several factors such as the oxidative status, stability, bleachability and purity of CPO. Therefore, the quality of CPO is essential for the production of high-quality refined palm oils. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) spectrophotometers are widely used for qualitative and quantitative analysis due to its ease-to-use operation and short sample analysis time. In this application news, Shimadzu UV-1280 UV-VIS spectrophotometer, a combined monitor double beam spectrophotometer was used for the analysis of CPO and refined palm oil products.
