Shimadzu Corporation is strengthening its biodiversity conservation efforts through business activities. We have developed approximately 8,000 m² of green space on the grounds of our Headquarters and Sanjo Works, known as “Shimadzu Forest.”
Our forest development initiatives are guided by the following three perspectives:
- Biodiversity conservation and cultural heritage — centered on native species of the region
- Providing habitats and environments for wildlife — with consideration for ecological networks
- Soil management using analytical technologies — through industry–academia collaboration
These efforts have been recognized: in March 2025, the site was certified by the Ministry of the Environment as a “Nature Coexistence Site,” and in August 2025, it was registered in an international database as an OECM (Other Effective area-based Conservation Measure).
Furthermore, in May, the forest received the highest rank, AAA, in the JHEP (Japan Habitat Evaluation and Certification Program) administered by the Ecosystem Conservation Society - Japan. Shimadzu initially obtained the AAA rating in 2015—the first manufacturing company in western Japan to do so—and successfully renewed the certification in 2020 and again in 2025, maintaining top-tier recognition.
Going forward, we will continue contributing to the achievement of globally‑shared commitments such as Nature Positive and 30by30, and work toward creating a rich forest where people and wildlife can coexist.
