Industry-Academia Collaboration for the Implementation of Cutting-Edge Research Results in Society

On June 3, Shimadzu Corporation concluded a comprehensive partnership agreement with the Tokushima University, a national university, to acquire innovative technology and create businesses that contribute to solving social issues, as well as for human resource development and personnel exchanges. The two parties will conduct joint research on next-generation light source technology, food technology, and underwater communication technology. They will also foster human resources, including researchers and engineers from both sides, and Tokushima University students.

The Tokushima University excels in next-generation light source technology, which involves using light in the medicine and biomedical sciences for the early detection and treatment of disease. Shimadzu will work with the Tokushima University's Institute of Post-LED Photonics (pLED) to commercialize a compact sensor that can detect specific compounds with ultra-high sensitivity to strengthen the med-tech business, which is a focus of the company's medium-term management plan. In the field of food-tech, discussions are underway with the university to conduct research related to food and health in collaboration with medical professionals in the clinical field. In the underwater communication technology area, Shimadzu will combine the underwater beam tracking technology developed by Tokushima University's Faculty of Science and Technology with Shimadzu's underwater optical wireless communication technology to strengthen the company's marine business.

Shimadzu and the Tokushima University are committed to promoting the societal implementation of these research results and contributing to the creation of new industries, thereby making a broad contribution to society at large.
