Rina Komokata of the Shimadzu Corporation Tennis Team SHIMADZU Breakers (Corporate Communications Department) won the gold medal in women’s doubles with partner Riko Suzuki (NTT Urban Development) and the bronze medal in singles at the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics tennis competition held from November 16 to 25 at Ariake Tennis Park (Tokyo Japan). This tournament is an international sporting event for athletes who are hard of hearing or deaf. Komokata competed in the Deaflympics for the first time.

In the doubles final on the 24th, she and partner defeated the Japanese national team pair of Chiaki Sugimoto (Kyoto Gaidai Nishi High School) and Yuria Miyagawa (Nihon University) 6-1, 6-2. On the following day, the 25th, she won the singles third-place playoff against Denmark’s Mathilde Tranberg 6–0, 6–0, earning the bronze medal. In mixed doubles with Naoto Oyamatsu (Kajima Road), she reached the quarterfinals.

Komokata commented, “In doubles, we were able to demonstrate the results of all the practice that Suzuki and I have built up. The singles semifinal loss was frustrating because it was so close, but my first Deaflympics was a valuable experience. I also identified many goals and challenges for the next four years, and I want to work to overcome them. Thank you very much for all the support. It really gave me strength.”

Komokata won the singles championship and doubles runner-up in the 2024 Australian Open Deaf Tennis Competition while a student at Doshisha University, and won two titles in the same tournament in January of this year in Deaf Tennis in which hearing-impaired players compete.
