MAP-100 Microplastic Automatic Preparation Device
A Shimadzu instrument that automatically pretreats microplastics collected from environmental water samples (product name: MAP-100 Microplastic Automatic Preparation Device) has been listed in “Reducing Leakage of Microplastics: Good Practices by the Japanese Business Sector” published by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment. At the Ministry of the Environment, initiatives and techniques at Japanese businesses that contribute to the prevention of microplastics, their runoff reduction, their alternatives, their collection, or public awareness of the problem are summarized in a good practices guide. In 2024, 19 companies were selected.
Shimadzu released the MAP-100 Microplastic Automatic Preparation Device in 2023. This is the world’s first dedicated preparation device designed to automate the process of extracting and collecting microplastics from oceans, rivers, lakes, and other aquatic environments. Before analysis using other instruments, impurities and substances adhering to the plastic surfaces must be removed. Replacing the removal (pretreatment) process, which to date has primarily been performed manually, with an instrument helps to ensure higher productivity, repeatability, and safety. The MAP-100 is primarily used by research institutions working on monitoring aquatic environments. By providing techniques and products for research involving microplastics, Shimadzu is taking initiatives to contribute to the well-being of the Earth.
