On March 10, Shimadzu Corporation was selected for the ninth consecutive year by the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Nippon Kenko Kaigi as a “White 500” company with superior health management practices, which is a recognition of publicly listed companies with outstanding health management practices. This system honors companies with a track record of particularly impressive health management, based on regional health issues and initiatives to promote health by the Nippon Kenko Kaigi. The “White 500” is awarded to the top corporations in the large-scale corporate sector.

Shimadzu Health Management Initiatives

Shimadzu Corporation subsidizes the cost of the MCI Screening Test Plus* and breast examinations for our employees, using Shimadzu products. The former uses liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer to evaluate the risk of mild cognitive impairment (MCI), said to be an early stage of dementia. From this fiscal year, the subsidies will be expanded to include the families of our employees. The latter uses dedicated PET system to perform painless breast exams. Breast exams are also offered to the female spouse of any employee. Additionally, subsidies have started for physical examinations for the families of our employees.

In 2017, a health declaration was established, and enacted with the objective of promoting and maintaining the health of our employees, with an emphasis on five important factors: exercise, diet, sleep, mental health, and quitting smoking. From the perspective of the so-called population approach in which everyone is entitled to know their health examination results, and to aim for self-improvement, a health challenge was started in 2021 aimed at all employees receiving regular health exams. This year, an 18-item score including blood pressure, blood tests, urine tests, lifestyle evaluation, and body mass index (BMI) will be compiled under the supervision of external doctors, as an incentive to understand one’s own health status. It was begun as an initiative to prevent the onset of disease, which includes consultations with occupational physicians for employees at risk for arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease within the next decade.
