April 14, 2025 | News & Notices Shimadzu Foundation Memorial Museum Certified as a “Registered Museum”
On March 13, Shimadzu Foundation Memorial Museum (Nakagyo-ku, Kyoto) was certified as a “Registered Museum” based on the Revised Museum Act. Shimadzu Corporation opened this museum on the 100th anniversary of the founding of the company in 1975. The building, at Nijo, Kiyamachi, was used as both a shop and a residence by the founder of Shimadzu Corporation, Genzo Shimadzu Senior, and his son, Genzo Shimadzu Junior. In 1999, it was certified as a registered tangible cultural property by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs, and in 2007, it was authorized as a Heritage of Industrial Modernization site by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
In April 2022, the Japanese Museum Act was revised for the first time in approximately 70 years. Under the new system in effect from April 2023, museums operated not only by the Japanese government and independent administrative agencies, but also by private corporations could now also be recognized as registered museums. In this facility, in addition to exhibiting products invented and released by Shimadzu Corporation, such as educational physics and chemistry instruments, analytical and measuring instruments, and industrial machinery, we collect and research them or related materials. Our museum has told the story not only of Shimadzu Corporation but also the history of science, technology, and education as it relates to the industrialization of Kyoto and Japan in the modern period. On March 31, 2025, Shimadzu Corporation celebrated its 150th anniversary. We will continue to aim for even better facility administration.
