December 15, 2025 | News & Notices Shimadzu Receives the Social value Prize at the Nikkei SDGs Management Awards

Shimadzu Corporation has received the Social value Prize at the 7th Nikkei SDGs Management Awards. Nikkei SDGs Management Awards recognize leading companies that simultaneously contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and enhance corporate value. Based on the results of the Nikkei Comprehensive Sustainability Survey, a panel of experts comprehensively judges initiatives of 830 companies, mainly listed companies, that respond to the survey. The Social value Prize is presented to companies demonstrating outstanding initiatives in the areas of respect for human rights, social contribution activities, working hours and leave practices, diversity, and human capital management. Last year, Shimadzu received the SDGs Strategy/business value Prize, which recognizes companies based on leadership from top management, contributions through business, and performance indicators. This marks the first time Shimadzu has received the Social value Prize. In the SDGs Management Rating, which evaluates results from the Nikkei Comprehensive Sustainability Survey, we achieved a 4.5 star rating (deviation score above 65 and less than 70).

The Shimadzu Group has established the Shimadzu Group Sustainability Charter based on its corporate philosophy “Contributing to Society through Science and Technology” and its management principle “Realizing Our Wishes for the Well-being of Mankind and the Earth.” In the medium-term management plan, we have set “Pursuit of Planetary Health” as our vision, and we are developing our business in four domains of social value creation: Healthcare, Green, Material, and Industry. To create an environment where employees can demonstrate their full abilities, we promote DE&I management under the slogan, “Embrace Differences, Include One and All,” and encourage health management so that every employee can work to the best of their ability in a safe, healthy environment.

Furthermore, recognizing that respect for the human rights of all Shimadzu Group stakeholders is fundamental to our corporate activities, we have established the Shimadzu Group CSR Procurement Guidelines. Among other measures, we comply with the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains of Minerals from Conflict-Affected and High-Risk Areas to prevent conflict minerals* from being included in the components and raw materials used in our products.

Since 2007, to encourage an interest in science among elementary, junior high, and high school students, we have held over 200 sessions of the Shimadzu Hands-On Analysis School using analytical and measuring instruments. Approximately 10,000 students have participated to date. In addition, employees and their families participate as volunteers at the Shimadzu Corporation Forest (52 hectares in Nantan City, Kyoto Prefecture), to support our environmental conservation efforts. Furthermore, Shimadzu Corporation's sports teams, the SHIMADZU Breakers, promote sports and community involvement through tennis, rugby, and baseball experience events.

In 2024, as part of our efforts to address societal challenges, we released the greenhouse gas analyzer, which simultaneously measures emissions of multiple agricultural greenhouse gases, such as methane and CO2, thereby supporting research aimed at achieving carbon neutrality. Furthermore, in 2025, we released the world’s first strontium optical lattice clock, boasting an accuracy of one second in 10 billion years and expected to be applied to the observation of movements in the earth’s crust, thereby contributing to solving societal challenges through cutting-edge technology.
