Shimadzu Corporation will release the combustion ion chromatograph system for environmental analysis applications, including PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in Japan and overseas on September 1. The system consists of the AQF-5000H automatic quick furnace (from Nittoseiko Analytech), which combusts samples and collects the resulting components; the IC-150 ion chromatograph, which quantifies the collected components; and the C-IC Solution software, which centrally manages both instruments. With the C-IC Solution software, analysis schedules can be created and measurement data managed via one window, which helps reduce data input and operating errors. It also includes a template compliant with EPA Method 1621, the method specified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for analyzing adsorbable organic fluorine in liquid samples. The template can be used to measure the total amount of PFAS.

PFAS compounds are known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down in the natural environment. Of the more than 10,000 PFAS identified, PFOS (perfluorooctanesulfonic acid) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) are thought to pose health risks, including cancer and endocrine disruption. Therefore, analysis of PFAS levels in water and products has been required. Combustion ion chromatographs are ideal for screening analyses to rapidly determine total PFAS, while the LCMS-8065XE high-performance liquid chromatograph mass spectrometer can simultaneously analyze multiple PFAS.

Furthermore, in the materials, electronic and electrical equipment, energy, and other fields, consideration for the environment and advanced quality control are required, combustion ion chromatographs are used to confirm that electronic parts are halogen-free or to measure the halogen, sulfur, or other content in steel slag, plastics, rubber, and coal.

The combustion ion chromatograph system now being released uses the new C-IC Solution software that improves the efficiency of analytical operations by providing a single interface for configuring analysis conditions, creating analysis schedules, checking/managing measurement results data, and other process steps. The Nexera IC ion chromatograph released in February of this year includes functionality for automatically diluting concentrated samples, which reduces the work involved.
