Shimadzu Corporation has released the new inspeXio SMX-225CT FPD HR Plus microfocus X-ray CT system. This system, which is equipped with a large high-resolution flat panel detector, obtains high-resolution, high-contrast cross-sectional images down to the finest detail, while still capturing a wide field of view. The software enhancements offer significant image resolution improvements and faster display speeds.

An X-ray CT (computed tomography) system is used to observe the internal structure of an object in three dimensions. The object being examined is rotated between a microfocus X-ray generator and an X-ray detector, and the resulting X-ray fluoroscopy images are digitally processed to create a 3D image. The CT control software provides support for the operator at all steps of the process, from operation of the CT system to data acquisition, CT image reconstruction, and display.

The inspeXio series is Shimadzu’s flagship industrial X-ray CT system. Because the internal structure of metal and plastic objects can be observed non-destructively in almost real-time, the systems have found wide application in the quality control and R&D of automobile parts, electronic devices, and lithium ion batteries.

Features

1. Faster Digital Processing and High-Resolution Software

Shimadzu’s proprietary HPCinspeXio high-performance computing system has been improved so that the processing time for CT image reconstruction is now 1.5 times faster. The company’s unique MPR display function is also now high-resolution, which enables high-resolution CT images to be analyzed even faster and in more detail.

2. Equipped with Function to Reconstruct Enlarged Images of Any Area

Once the data has been acquired, it is now possible to magnify just the area of interest by simply recomputing the data and generating a new image. High-magnification cross-sectional images can be obtained even for objects where increasing magnification is difficult. Since this only involves recomputing the 3D image, there is no need to re-scan the object being examined.

3. Longer Filament Life

The system is equipped with a function that automatically adjusts the current through the filament that generates the X-rays. As a result, the expected life of the filament is now 2.5 times longer than before. This reduces maintenance frequency and provides lower running costs.
