Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (SSI, Columbia, Maryland, USA), a Shimadzu Group company, has opened its new research and development (R&D) facility in South San Francisco, California.
Since April 2024, SSI has been enhancing its R&D division with a focus on developing analytical instruments, software, applications, and lab automation solutions tailored to the needs of pharmaceutical and life science customers in North America.
The San Francisco Bay Area is a premier hub for pharmaceutical and life science companies and research institutions. By establishing a lab in this location, SSI aims to better understand customer needs and collaborate with cutting-edge AI startups and life science technology companies in the region.
The South San Francisco Lab will focus on three key research areas: (1) analytical methods for Drug Delivery Systems (DDS), including lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) and adeno-associated viruses (AAVs); (2) new solutions for bioprocessing and preparative purification; and (3) cell culture solutions. Planned instrumentation includes the LCMS-8060RX triple quadrupole LC-MS, the Nexera ultra high-performance liquid chromatograph, the Nexera UC supercritical fluid chromatograph, the FFF-C8030 centrifugal field-flow fractionation.
