First Exhibition at Milan Design Week
Exhibiting Research Results on the Theme of Art and Science
Shimadzu Corporation will exhibit for the first time at Milan Design Week, the world's largest design event, showing hands-on scientific artworks inspired by our core technology, chromatography.
Milan Design Week
Milan Design Week is one of the world’s largest international design events held every April in Milan, Italy, called Salone del Mobile.Milano (also known as Milano Salone), the world’s largest international furniture trade fair, and Fuorisalone , which is held simultaneously at various locations in the city of Milan.
Many companies and designers from all over the world present products and artworks using their technologies. More than 2,000 exhibitors participated in the Milano Salone 2023, and more than 300,000 people from 181 countries visited the event over 6 days.

WONDER POWDER - a Scientific Art of Hands-on Experience
Our exhibition at Milan Design Week 2024 is one of the research results of "WONDER POWDER," a joint research project we have been working on with the design studio we+ (Tokyo) since June 2022.
Works of the research project "WONDER POWDER" *
This work was inspired by our company's flagship technology, chromatography. Powders of various materials such as aluminum, rock paint, and mica fall through the water filling the acrylic case. The case can be rotated by visitors themselves, and differences in the size, weight, and shape of the powder create different settling speeds and gradations.
The powdered raw materials inside the prismatic acrylic cases create beautiful gradation patterns as the cases are rotated. *

Our products are used to investigate the elements, distribution, particle size, and shape of substances floating in the case. It is an attempt to make people aware of the charms of analytical and measurement technology by approaching the beauty of attractive powder movements from both a sensible approach and a logical approach using Shimadzu’s analytical technology.

Comment from the Person in Charge
It's a new attempt for us as a design department to figure out how to make our company's generally obscure technology look simple and appealing. I hope a lot of people will see it and notice the potential of analytical technology through the filter of design and art.
In the future, we will continue to take measures that will lead to an improvement in the global recognition of Shimadzu brand and design technology capabilities.
