Wasted plastics are collected and sorted by type using a variety of methods, including wind, electrostatic, and optical sorting, and together, contaminants are removed.​

In these processes, it is necessary to determine the type of resin and contaminants. For this analysis, a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrophotometer, energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) analyzer, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) are useful.​
