Rina Komokata (Corporate Communication Department), a member of Shimadzu Corporation’s SHIMADZU Breakers tennis team, received the Sports Merit Commendation and the Award for Outstanding Deaflympics Performers and Others under the Awards for Sports Merit and Outstanding Performers at International Competitions on August 7. The awards are presented by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to honor athletes and their coaches who have achieved outstanding results at the Olympic, Paralympic, and Deaflympic Games, as well as other international competitions.

At the Tokyo 2025 Deaflympics tennis competition (Ariake Tennis Park), Komokata won a gold medal in women’s doubles with Riko Suzuki (NTT Urban Development) and a bronze medal in singles and reached the quarterfinals in mixed doubles with Naoto Oyamatsu (KAJIMAROAD). For these achievements, her women’s doubles gold medal earned her the Sports Merit Commendation, while her third-place finish in women’s singles and quarterfinal finish in mixed doubles earned her the Award for Outstanding Deaflympics Performers and Others.

Komokata commented, “I am extremely happy to have received such wonderful awards. I feel that winning medals at the Deaflympics in Japan provided an opportunity for people who were previously unfamiliar with Deaf sports to learn about them and appreciate their appeal. With many more competitions coming up, I will not forget to be grateful to everyone around me who has supported me thus far, and I will do my best to deliver even better results.”
