Toward a Circular Society through Industry-Academia Collaboration

Shimadzu Corporation has begun a pilot program with Ryukoku University to pilot trial a refurbishment business for used analytical and measuring instruments (products that have been repaired and serviced by the manufacturer). This initiative is being implemented as part of the “Comprehensive Partnership Agreement for the Creation of a Circular Society” signed by both Parties in 2023.

In this pilot, used high-performance liquid chromatographs (HPLC) are repaired and serviced by Shimadzu and loaned to laboratories in the Ryukoku University Faculty of Advanced Science and Technology as refurbished units. Starting on March 13, 2026, for about one year, Shimadzu will ask the university to evaluate and collect data on the viability of the acquired data, the durability of the instruments, user experience, and usage status (number of uses and operating time). Based on the feedback received, we will evaluate the performance users require, the practicality of refurbished products, and the feasibility of the circular business model.

Shimadzu Corporation certifies products with outstanding environmental performance as Eco-Products Plus. The company has made it mandatory for new products to reduce their environmental impact and is promoting a wide range of environmental initiatives, such as the introduction of biomass and sustainable materials and waste recycling. Through this pilot program, we aim to achieve resource circulation through refurbishing the instrument itself, thereby reducing the consumption of primary resources and minimizing waste. At Shimadzu, we will continue to broaden our lineup of products and services that support a sustainable society.
