A New, Groundbreaking Separable Model in the iMScope Series

The previous iMScope consisted of an integrated mass spectrometer and MS imaging unit. However, the iMScope QT is a separate unit that can be attached to a mass spectrometer (LCMS-9030). The instrument is easy to attach or detach simply by moving it along guide rails to the correct position. As a result, the 330 kg unit can be attached or detached by one person in less than 10 minutes. The design was repeatedly verified for safety and ease-of-use from an ergonomic standpoint to achieve optimum operability.

A Design that Expresses Precision and Robustness

As a product that attaches to the LCMS-9030, the front expresses the uniqueness of the iMScope QT, while the sides were designed to be consistent with the design elements of the LCMS-9030.
The sides were designed for continuity with the LCMS-9030, and the operability of the product maintains consistency with the Shimadzu brand image. The front expresses a sense of precision and robustness, indicative of high technical capabilities, through the use of a bold color scheme, form, and materials. The overall form, which is designed to appear as if cut from a solid block, is bold yet highly precise. In addition, the silver on the door and handles enhances the sense of precision while emphasizing the access parts. The handles on both sides of the front are machined from aluminum and have been surface treated to create a tough yet sophisticated impression. The beautiful design and functionality create a product that is both aesthetically appealing and functional.

The Design of the Handles Turned Negative Elements into a Plus

Given that the product would be attached to the LCMS-9030, there were many design constraints. It was important to convey the distinctiveness of the iMScope QT from the front while conveying consistency with the LCMS-9030 when seen from the sides. Accordingly, the design of the exterior had to be done while taking this balance into consideration. The part that took the most design effort was the machined aluminum handles on both sides of the front. While being careful to provide their function in moving the instrument, we also tried to express the function in terms of beautiful design. We conveyed this idea to the designers, who then achieved it in the finish of these extremely attractive handles. In the end, the handles, which initially seemed like a negative design element, finished up becoming a positive element and an excellent example of good design.
