Exhibiting at TOCAT10, an International Conference on Catalysis
The 10th Tokyo Conference on Advanced Catalytic Science and Technology (TOCAT10) was held at Waseda University from August 18 to 23. Organized every four years, with the Catalysis Society of Japan playing a central role, this year’s conference brought together approximately 1,000 researchers from Japan and abroad.

A catalyst is a substance that accelerates a chemical reaction or helps it proceed more efficiently while undergoing little or no change itself. Catalysts are used in a wide range of fields, including energy, pharmaceutical, and chemical manufacturing, and efforts to reduce environmental impact. At TOCAT, researchers discussed the latest advances in catalysis research and technology.
As a top-tier sponsor, Shimadzu showcased its latest solutions for catalysis research. These included gas chromatography (GC), a technology used to separate and analyze the components in gas mixtures.
Showcasing Solutions for Catalysis Research
During the conference, Shimadzu’s booth featured several solutions to support catalysis research. These included the FluxEdge GC system, launched last year, and the newly released GCMS-TQ RX series. Video presentations introducing products from TESCAN, which recently joined the Shimadzu Group were also shown.
Catalysis research requires an accurate understanding of the reactions that occur in the presence of a catalyst and the products they generate. A gas chromatograph (GC) separates and analyzes gaseous components generated by a reaction. It is widely used to evaluate catalyst performance and elucidate reaction mechanisms. Catalysts are widely used in research related to carbon neutrality, and Shimadzu contributes to society through its work in this field.

FluxEdge GC system
Shimadzu displayed an actual FluxEdge GC system at the venue, introducing the product to numerous researchers. The FluxEdge GC system is a gas chromatograph capable of rapidly and accurately analyzing the components of small quantities of gas. By enabling researchers to efficiently monitor changes in gas composition as reactions proceed, the system is used in a wide range of R&D applications, including catalysis research.
Researchers from around the world visited the booth, where they engaged in discussions and asked questions about the product’s features and applications.
Hosting a Shimadzu-Sponsored Event
On August 24, the day after TOCAT10 concluded, Shimadzu hosted an event in Tokyo entitled “Next-Generation GC to Accelerate Catalysis Research: A Game Changer in Reaction Product Analysis.”

The event was organized to raise awareness among catalysis researchers of the latest technologies incorporated into the FluxEdge GC system. More than 70 researchers from Japan and around the world attended. In addition to presentations on the system and other cutting-edge technologies, the program featured talks by prominent researchers and a panel discussion. Participants discussed the importance of analytical technologies in catalysis research and their potential for future advances.

Professor Carsten Sievers of the Georgia Institute of Technology asks a question about the FluxEdge GC system
Through Shimadzu’s sponsorship and exhibition at TOCAT10, as well as the event Shimadzu hosted, it highlighted the potential of the FluxEdge GC system to catalysis researchers worldwide. The event also provided an opportunity to expand engagement with the global research community and raise awareness of Shimadzu’s technologies and activities. Shimadzu will continue to advance science and technology by supporting R&D with its cutting-edge analytical and measuring technologies.
Comment from the Person in Charge at Shimadzu Corporation
Looking back, we believe that the many connections we had built through our global efforts to develop customer relationships helped make this event possible.
Although the event involved many new initiatives—such as staging a large-scale exhibition at an international conference in Japan and planning and hosting a Shimadzu GC event in conjunction with the conference—we were pleased to welcome over 30 customers from overseas. Thanks to the support of all the stakeholders and our customers, the event proved extremely meaningful.
We will use the valuable feedback we received through the event to improve our future products, services, and activities as we strive to be our customers’ “First Choice.”
