This instrument uniquely measures dynamic indentation depth, not the indentation after the test. This in turn permits measurement of very thin films and surface (treatment) layers that are impossible to measure with conventional methods.Additionally, this same method supplies the data needed to calculate elastic modulus on the test specimens.

The instrumented indentation hardness test is a method of measuring hardness by measuring test force and indentation depth, and the micro-indentation method is one of instrumented indentation hardness.
Since the direct contact area is calculated from the indentation depth, it is possible to measure the hardness of the specimen (For example, plastic, rubber, glass, etc.) which the edge of the indentation cannot be specified.
