The use of electric vehicles is being promoted due to strengthened environmental regulations for automobiles in countries in Europe, the Americas, and Asia.
Strategic conversion to electric vehicles is an urgent issue for some automobile manufacturers. Electric vehicles require not only the new development of batteries and motors, but also the mechanisms and components that are not utilized as the drive source in a conventional automobile. The performance of batteries, motors and other parts is significantly influenced by the characteristics of the materials for parts. The characteristics of materials are evaluated from a variety of perspectives including composition, structure, surface characteristics, strength, durability, and hardness.
In particular, in order to evaluate the safety of batteries, non-destructive interior observations are implemented, as well as battery crushing and piercing tests, and impact tests.
The lithium-ion rechargeable battery is a high voltage and high energy density, these are widely used for consumer electronics applications, such as mobile phones and laptop computers. Due to enhanced consumer concerns for the environment and fuel savings, the automobile industry has also been developing these batteries for hybrid vehicle (HV) and electric vehicle (EV) applications, which should lead to enhanced output, efficiency, and performance.
Fuel cells are devices that convert the energy obtained from an electrochemical reaction of hydrogen fuel directly into electrical energy. Because they are highly efficient and emit only water, fuel cells have attracted great interest due to their potential for contributing significantly to providing a solution for both energy and environmental concerns. However, further improvements in performance, durability, and cost are required before there is widespread adoption. Achieving such improvements will require that those in fuel cell R&D and quality control fields evaluate multiple aspects of fuel cells, including measuring their physical properties, analyzing the structure, observing their morphology, and performing various strength test.
