Environmental Education and Training

A diverse environmental education program is prepared, varying by hierarchical level and objective.
Implementation is mandatory due to ISO 14001. However, there are also voluntary measures being taken internally, with practical details implemented in each department related to lessening risks.

1.General Environmental Education

The objective of such training is to disseminate environmental policies, the importance of compliance with environmental management system requirements, significant environmental aspects through the results of environmental impact assessments, environmental laws and regulations related to business activities, and the company-wide and departmental objectives and targets for each year.
We provide clear information on our efforts in energy conservation and climate‑change action, circular‑economy initiatives such as waste and water management and the use of sustainable materials, eco‑friendly product design, and biodiversity conservation.
This applies to all personnel in the site at Shimadzu Corporation and their related business organizations subject to ISO14001 authentication. It is also implemented separately in each department for personnel who are reshuffled or transferred.

2.Education for Internal Environmental Auditors

Increasing the capabilities of each and every internal environmental auditor is indispensable to enhance the quality of the audits held every year. For this reason, periodic training is implemented for internal environmental auditors, with all personnel required to participate on an annual basis, thereby deepening their knowledge and raising their level.

3.Special Environmental Education and Training

As a result of environmental impact assessments, education is implemented with respect to relevant personnel involved in activities identified as needing to be addressed as a priority.

• Education of Eco-Leaders and Industrial Waste Leaders
  Employees involved in the proper separation of waste, a company-wide initiative, are designated as “Eco-Leaders,” while those involved in the management of industrial waste to ensure compliance with the relevant laws and regulations, who are located mainly in our production plants, research and development facilities, and sales offices, are designated as “Industrial Waste Leaders,” and we provide them with training via e-learning.
  To encourage recycling and proper management of various types of waste, the training includes information on the amount of waste, the recycling rate, and tips on actions to promote these efforts, as well as in-house case studies.
• Education Related to Chemical Substance Management
  Failure to handle chemical substances properly can lead not only to violations of laws and regulations, but also to personal injury, environmental pollution, and other risks. 
  For staff in departments that handle controlled chemical substances, as defined in-house, we provide training on handling such materials from acquisition through to disposal, to strengthen the system for legal compliance and safe usage at each department.
  Practical training is also held at facilities identified as potentially having a significant environmental impact should an accident occur to strengthen our ability to respond to risk.

4.Environmental Education for new employees

For new employees, we provide education on the background of environmental issues and the importance of addressing them. We also help them understand our environmental policy, energy-saving initiatives, waste segregation and recycling practices, chemical substance management rules, the environmental considerations incorporated into our products, and the environmental contributions made through our products.
