Shimadzu Joins the RE100 Global Environmental Initiative

Shimadzu Corporation has joined RE100, a global environmental initiative, and pledged that the Shimadzu Group would use 100 % renewable energy in its business activities by 2050.

Energy Saving Initiatives to Reduce CO2 Emissions

In order to reduce CO2 emissions from our business activities, we are actively implementing various energy saving measures and investing in the use of renewable energy.
Shimadzu Corporation has conducted energy saving diagnoses focusing mainly on plants and offices with high electricity consumption and is promoting energy saving activities such as the use of smart meters.

Use of renewable energy

In addition to the Head Office/Sanjo Works and Murasakino Works in Kyoto, solar panels have been installed at Group companies in Shimane in Japan, Malaysia, and the Philippines to generate electricity for their own use. Group companies in Germany and the U.K. have switched to electricity contracts that provide 100% renewable energy.

Future Initiatives to Achieve RE100 Targets

In order to accelerate efforts toward a decarbonized society, we have set an interim target of increasing the share of renewable energy in our power consumption to 85% by 2030 and 90% by 2040, and to 100% by 2050. As part of the pledge, we plan to introduce power from 100% renewable energy sources from fiscal 2021 at our major group sites in Japan, including plants and research laboratories. We will continue to contribute to realizing a sustainable society as a company committed to taking a range of environmental measures such as reducing CO2 emissions.

The Shimadzu Group considers climate change to be one of the most important social issues in the world and has made it a top management priority.

Aiming for Carbon Neutrality

In support of the TCFD Recommendations, the Shimadzu Group has been working to achieve carbon neutrality by disclosing climate-related information, setting CO2 emissions reduction targets that are consistent with the temperature targets under the Paris Agreement (SBT), and implementing the RE100 pledge which states that 100% of electricity used is generated from renewable energy sources.
